Family in shock after teen shot at close range
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
A KwaDukuza family grieving the death of their child says it is upsetting that no evidence was captured of the car their daughter’s attacker was driving.
Mayor Lindile Nhaca, who visited the family of 17-year-old Rethabile Mashile in Ntshawini, has been sharing their devastation.
Mashile was a grade 8 pupil at Chief Albert Luthuli High School.
Nhaca says according to Mashile’s loved ones, multiple images and videos were taken of the crime scene - but none of them feature the gunman’s vehicle.
"This is clearly a desperate and nonsensical killing of an innocent child and we are once again reminded of the deteriorating morals of society that has unquestionably become trigger happy.”
It is reported the teen was shot at close range while she was walking home on Thursday afternoon.
Nhaca says the family and members of the community say they don't feel safe and have called on all law enforcement agencies to ensure the child’s killer is brought to book.
"We are calling on all law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in this investigation. I send my condolences to the Mashile family and friends and her school mates."
