Family of Phoenix murder accused Jeetendra Jaikissoon to chart way forward
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
The family of a Phoenix murder suspect, who died in police custody last week, says they will issue a statement at a press briefing on Tuesday.
The family will detail their next steps at the briefing.
Jeetendra Jaikissoon was being held at Westville Prison when he complained of chest pains and breathing difficulties.
The Department of Correctional Services says he was transferred from the Durban Management Area to hospital, where he passed away.
His family says it appreciates the efforts of community activists and lobby groups in calling for justice but has distanced itself from statements made by political leaders.
Jaikissoon, and brothers Ned and Dylan Govender were arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder after 36 people were killed in Phoenix during the July civil unrest.
A mass community meeting was held on Sunday following Jaikissoon's death.
But community member Jonathan Annipen says the meeting became political.
"I do believe that it really was not in the interest of the people who are affected by this injustice, as I would call it.
"I think it had a political agenda to it and it was very underhand for politicians to come on the eve of the elections to use this misfortune of grieving families to garner votes."
