A former northern KZN administration clerk has begun serving his sentence after he was found guilty of selling learner’s licenses.

Xolani Simelane was sentenced in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Authorities say Simelane was employed as an administration clerk at Abaqulusi Municipality between 2012 and 2013.
The Hawks’ KZN spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo, says he was responsible for learner’s licence bookings in the traffic department.
"He was arrested and charged with 48 counts of corruption in 2013, and he appeared in court several times until he was convicted on 23 June 2023," said Mhlongo.
Mhlongo says Simelane accepted bribes of up to R1 000 from applicants in order to issue them with learner’s licences without having written a test.
"He was sentenced to six years imprisonment, of which two years is suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of any corruption activity or fraud during the period of the suspension."
