The Durban Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Ntombi-Zandile Ndlovu to six years behind bars for fraud and money laundering, to the tune of 850,000.

Prosecutors said the former alumni coordinator, who wasn't married, took advantage of DUT's life and funeral insurance for staff.

She claimed her husband died but used the details of an unknown man.

The DUT's Alan Khan said they hope several other staff members - who were also arrested for submitting fraudulent claims - face the music.

"We'd like to reinforce that it is the university that initiated the internal disciplinary process that resulted in some instances the dismissal of employees who were involved in the scheme."

Subsequently, the prosecuting authority then took over as the nature of the misconduct was deemed to have been criminal.

"This is really one example that sends out a pretty strong message that DUT is dealing decisively with matters of the misconduct and we're also reinforcing that DUT does not and will not promote nor condone any incidents of fraud and corruption," added Khan.
