eThekwini writes off ‘irrecoverable’ R400m
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
eThekwini Municipality has been forced to write off R427 million deemed irrecoverable due unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

The hefty amount was contained in a report from the Municipal Public Accounts Committee before full council.
Among some of the contributing factors was that government officials were doing business with the city - many of these officials being from SAPS and the Health Department.
The city's Lindiwe Khuzwayo says the MPAC report also found that on the other hand, eThekwini was not empowered to take disciplinary actions against people who were not their employees.
"The city noted the report submitted to MPAC requesting that in compliance with the municipal Finance Management Act, irregular expenditure amounting to millions be certified as irrecoverable and be written off by council based on outcomes of the investigation of such expenditure.”
