eThekwini works to find homes for Howell Road residents

The eThekwini Mayor's office says officials are hoping to find a lasting solution to the housing issue along Sydenham's Howell Road as soon as possible.

Officials, including a delegation from the Mayor's office, are set to meet with residents this morning following a court-ordered eviction recently.     

Mayoral Spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede says teams have been meeting with more than a thousand people who were forcefully removed from their homes over the past two weeks.

"We met with the affected community, a delegation led by the office of the mayor, the councillor and officials from the Department of Housing. We will have continuous meetings with residents up until we find a solution," he says.

The evictions sparked violent protest action with families saying they have nowhere else to go.   

Residents say they're being forced to pay rent for RDP housing but according to First Metro Housing - the owners of the property - the homes are for rental purposes only.
