Some residents on Acara Street in Stonebridge say the spill has made it onto their driveways and properties.

Community activist Vivian Pillay says they are not only worried about the damage to their properties but also their health.

"We are a civic association want to engage with the municipality. Now that this matter is getting serious, we are seeking legal advice and we are going to human resources in eThekwini and from there, we want to engage the Human Rights Commission as well.

"We will do that by Monday if we do not get an immediate response from the municipality."

Ward 48 councillor Michelle Lutchman says a manhole has been overflowing because of a non-functional pump station.

She says she's been in constant contact with city officials and hopes it will be resolved soon.

"I am liaising with the superior intendant of the sewage department, I have even called out roads and storm water officials to come out and have a look at the situation.

"All stakeholders that could help I have called. I have asked for a honey sucker to come out there to suction water, unfortunately, I was told there was no honey suckers available and as soon as one is available, it will come out."
