eThekwini working to reopen Umhlanga beaches
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
EThekwini is working around the clock to reopen some beaches around Umhlanga.
The beaches were closed due to pump station issues at Westbrook, Umhlanga Main and Bronze beaches, which has led to reports of high levels of E-coli.
The beach closures have come as schools closed on Friday.
This could cost the hospitality industry, as those who had planned to enjoy some downtime at these beaches may no longer be able to.
The city's Lindiwe Khuzwayo explains the issues and timelines they expect to have them resolved.
"The city can confirm that Umhlanga Main and Bronze beaches were closed following the failure of two pumps at Portland pump station. We have since sourced another pump and the pump station will be operational by the end of this week. This will stop the overflow to the beach and the water should clear within 48 hours."
