Updated | By Steve Bhengu
eThekwini says the municipality is bleeding millions of
rands each year due to rampant cable theft.
It has described the scourge of cable theft as devastating to communities, adding that streetlights and the grid are known to have been targeted through illegal connections.
Some reports say the city has had to fork out some R40 million over the past financial year for repairs.
More than 50 cases are currently before the courts.

"It's a serious problem. We are appealing to the public and all stakeholders to work with us to ensure we nib the scourge it in the bud," says eThekwini spokesperson Mswakhe Mayisela.
"If we don't do that it's going to derail the economy and impact negatively on the well-being of the residents. So it's a serious problem that requires us to work with the communities to ensure that we isolate these criminals."
