Eskom to deal with municipal debt, Mashatile says
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Deputy President Paul Mashatile says Eskom will offer incentivised debt relief to struggling municipalities.
But he told Parliament on Thursday there will be conditions.
Municipal debt to the power utility has grown to around R53 billion - a figure the cash-strapped entity says makes it difficult to keep the lights on.

During his maiden Q&A session in the National Assembly this afternoon, Mashatile said an additional fund will be made available later this month to reduce the utility's debt burden.
"The debt relief of R243 billion will be implemented over the next three years. Government's intervention of explicitly taking on this debt is aimed at reducing fiscal risks and enhancing long-term fiscal sustainability."
