Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Security measures are being beefed up at the newly-constructed Shongweni Reservoir, to prevent incidents of vandalism and theft.
The eThekwini Municipality unveiled the project on Wednesday, saying it is already boosted water storage capacity in several areas.
The new reservoir holds six megalitres of water.
It was built next to the old reservoir which can store 0.8 megalitres.
The City's Gugu Sisilana says Shongweni needed a reservoir big enough to supply its growing population.

She says security personnel have been deployed to the area.
Ultrasonic inline flow meters have been buried deep underground, offering more protection against vandals.
"Areas severed by the reservoir include Shongweni, Salem, Ofudu, Clifton, and parts of Zwelibomvu.
"eThwekini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said we are doing our best to ensure that our infrastructure is maintained and upgraded to meet the current demand."
