eThekwini unrest damage runs into billions - Kaunda

Damage to businesses, road infrastructure and vehicles due to waves of violence and looting is running into the billions, according eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.

"R1 billion loss of stock, about R15 billion damage to property and equipment, 55 000 informal traders are affected 40 000 formal businesses impacted, including small business and a large portion of those who may never recover, Kaunda said. 


He addressed residents outside the Phoenix Police Station on Wednesday.

"Whether we bring SANDF, metro police, SAPS, but that will not be an absolute solution. An absolute solution is to change our mindset. We do not need to destroy our livelihoods.” 


The community's reeling after racial tensions boiled over leading to bloodshed.


Kaunda's responded to this: "The people of South Africa fought against all forms of discrimination including racism and we have a constitution that promotes, among other things the freedom of movement.
