eThekwini under fire for splurging on million-rand events
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
EThekwini has come under criticism once again for its plans to host more events to the tune of millions of rands while the city continues to face some issues with delivery of services.
This time it's over its move to apparently splurge R10,9 million on events, which include a hip-hop festival and picnics among others.
The developments come as the city is still receiving backlash over its plans for a R1,7 million staff party while its residents continue to struggle with increasing tariffs, inconsistent water and electricity supply, and R1,5 billion spent irregularly as per the auditor-general's findings.
The DA eThekwini's Gavin Hegter says they will be challenging the city over the matter.
"The city is not cutting back on the nasty haves, when we've got sewage running down our streets, we've got our water infrastructure collapsing.
“We're losing approximately 56% of our potable water that we buy from Umgeni Water and yet they find it necessary to spend money on these nasty haves.”
