eThekwini, uMhlathuze lay out measures in a bid to curb coronavirus outbreaks

The cities of eThekwini and uMhlathuze have announced measures they're putting in place - amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Among other things - eThekwini water storage tanks, liquid soap dispensers and hand sanitisers will be made available at all informal settlements in the city where there are no ablution facilities.


eThekwini is also asking families having funerals to limit the number of mourners to family members only - or to keep the number to not more than 50 at the cemetery.


Swimming at all beaches in Durban has also been banned - but the beaches will remain open to members of the public.


eThekwini Municipality says the bathing ban's been put in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The City says it's not clear at this stage how long the prohibition will be in place for.


All municipal libraries will also be closed.


uMhlathuze says all public swimming pools in Richards Bay and surrounds will be closed.


It says frontline workers, cashiers and licensing staff who deal with customers - will be issued with surgical gloves, hand sanitisers and face masks where necessary.


uMhlathuze Mayor, Mduduzi Mhlongo held a briefing today on the city's immediate response to the pandemic.
