eThekwini: Terminating Public Employment Programme ‘out of our control’

The eThekwini Municipality says it still needs to find ways to revive its Public Employment Programme.

Thousands of jobs were terminated due to budget constraints.

On Tuesday, the municipality said it could no longer pay employees. 

Spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says over 3,000 beneficiaries received termination letters.

She says the move was out of their control, highlighting budget cuts by the National Treasury reduced the budget to R141 million.

"This significantly affected the Municipality’s ability to retain the majority of beneficiaries. This is indeed a very disappointing development that is beyond the Municipality’s control.

"The programme has been a major success in terms of providing an income to the participants who joined when it started in the 2021/22 financial year.

"There are currently over 6000 beneficiaries who are part of the programme. The municipality sincerely apologies to the 3541 affected beneficiaries who have been terminated. Their contribution to service delivery has been immense."
