Last week, the city warned residents of the possible supply interruptions in south and northern regions due to a failed water pump at Inanda Dam.

Mchunu says he's been in touch with the uMngeni Water Board.

"We have sent people, a team of experts to go and assess the pump in Durban Water Heights and then they will then get the outcome of the assessment and once they are sure of the assessment.

"They will then start acting on the outcome of the assessment and the work that needs to be done in that particular pump and as a result, a number of places are affected, including Umlazi and Phoenix."

He's apologised for the inconvenience.

"We apologise to the residents of eThekwini , particularly those that will be affected and therefore will be getting reduced water, and we are talking about reduced water, it's not a question of no water at all."
