Updated | By Newswatch
As the African National Congress' elective conference draws closer, it's been confirmed that former health minister Zweli Mkhize's joined the race for the ANC presidency.

The party's eThekwini region's endorsed Mkhize as its preferred candidate to challenge President Cyril Ramaphosa for the role.
It's also backing Paul Mashatile as deputy president.
A statement from the organisation says there was an engagement this week between ANC KZN leaders and the regional executive committee in eThekwini.

This formed part of discussions on the outcomes of the party's upcoming national conference.
The statement says they feel there is a strong public perception that the ANC isn't focusing on the real issues of service delivery and improving the lives of people.
This is why they've agreed that a new president and deputy president are needed to refocus the party and ultimately change the country's future.
