It says it has placed its 500 member structure on high alert ahead of plans by the EFF to stage a national shutdown.

“To make sure nothing will happen that is criminal, that is going to disturb neighbourhoods, or disturb businesses situated in our area," says eThekwini Neighbourhood Watch spokesperson Boni Mthiyane.

"We are worried about looting, we are worried about the destruction of property that might come. We don't know it will happen, but we are on high alert. We have consulted with the police and metro police department."

Mthiyane says the group was formed after the 2021 July unrest, and since then, its membership has grown to more than 500.

He says they patrol communities in Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu and uMlazi.

"We will have our members who will be situated in business areas such as malls in our areas. There are quite a number of shisanyamas within our area as well.

"Just to make sure that there aren’t any disruptions or problem that is going to come with the shutdown expected on Monday."

Defence Minister Thandi Modise says the South African National Defence Force has been placed on standby.

Both Santaco and the National Taxi Alliance have confirmed they won't be taking part in Monday's shutdown and have called on taxi associations to abide by that decision.
