The party rejected the motion during Tuesday's sitting but was outvoted.

This means that some municipal staff will receive incentives for the 2021/2022 financial year.

The DA's caucus leader Thabani Mthethwa has questioned the payment of performance bonuses as the city battles to sort out its sewage crisis.

"We felt that even though not every municipal employee who is said to be underperforming, currently, there is a complete collapse of service delivery and governance in the city."

"Our position in the DA is that each and every cent which is identified must go towards fixing our infrastructure that is going to make sure our tourism sector recovers."

Meanwhile, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda's motivated for the bonuses, explaining why the workers deserve them.

"Firstly, we welcome this report because since our city was devastated by floods, we need to consider who was at the forefront of returning services to the people.

"Our electricity supply was disrupted by heavy storms. Our workers immediately sprang into action. Even opposition parties were impressed. People even noted on the ground how swiftly power was restored in communities. So these are the workers we want to encourage to say continue with the wonderful work."
