eThekwini Metro cops to be equipped with body cams
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
The eThekwini Metro Police Department is going hi-tech, as the city gets ready to welcome millions of visitors for the December holidays.
Officers are going to be equipped with body cameras and tazer guns, in a bid to efficiently combat crime in the city.
Metro Police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad says the cameras will also monitor officers' conduct on duty.
"In the police fraternity we have had allegations and reports of bad behaviour, however this will counteract all these bad behaviour towards police and community. So yes, we can bring back the trust within the police and the community," he said.
Sewpersad says their vehicles will also be fitted with number plate reading cameras to analyse information about a vehicle and its driver, such as outstanding fines.
