EThekwini to meet with Quarry Road residents
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
EThekwini says a community meeting will be held to address the concerns raised by residents of the Quarry Road informal settlement after protests broke out on the M19 yesterday.
The busy route was barricaded with rocks and burning tyres in the vicinity of Quarry Road and Mountbatten Drive for about five hours.
One person was electrocuted while trying to evade arrest for public violence. Several others, including children, were treated after breathing in tear gas fired by police.
The municipality says a preliminary meeting will be organised with community leaders, the councillor for Ward 23 and the relevant city department.
Resident Lizo Mpongo has told Newswatch they want basic services.
''There is no electricity, we do understand that the protests are illegal but we still want the councillors attention and the municipality. You cannot walk an hour to access toilet facilities and walk another hour back home. That [shouldn't be] allowed in South Africa.
''All these facilities should be made available to the community. It's not right for such a big community to have only three toilets,'' he said.
Two people were arrested for public violence.
