Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says a contractor has been appointed to begin repairs on the Southern Aqueduct.

“The repairs that will commence next week are aimed at re-activating the line while the new pipeline is being laid. We are expecting the water supply to improve in the southern areas within six months from the start of the contract. The new pipeline will be undertaken for 24 months for R1.2 billion."

Mayor Kaunda was speaking at a briefing on Thursday as some residents face a dry Easter weekend.

In Queenburgh, some households and businesses haven't had running water for around two weeks due to low levels at the Northdene reservoir.

"The Southern Aqueduct will bring much-needed relief to downstream areas in the south of Durban including Chatsworth, Shallcross, St Wendolins, Nagina, Northdene, Makhutha, Adams Mission, Queensburgh, Welbedatch, uMlazi, Folweni, Nsimbini and Golokodo,” Kaunda added.

The mayor has also indicated the replacement of air valves on the Northern Aqueduct has been completed.

"The City has installed and serviced 70 valves as part of the air valve replacement programme to improve efficiency of water flow and increase pressure within the Northern Aqueduct at a cost of R7 million.”

The City says it remains committed to improving water supply to affected communities who are services by this 32km-long northern pipeline.
