eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says this stage of the two thousand hectare project will include the retail high street of Westown Square, a new hospital, residential apartments, as well as commercial, business and logistics sub-precincts.

He says once all phases are complete it's anticipated 30 000 jobs will be created.

"We are aware that this project is located between ward 7 and ward 103 and we will ensure that the people of these two wards are prioritised in terms of empowerment opportunities."

"Since this is a city-wide project and because of its magnitude, other services will be sourced from neighbouring wards in the municipality. This R30 billion investment includes an urban-mixed used development which seeks to create a new economic hub in this region."

Carlos Correia, who is the developer and CEO of property management company Fundamentum, says the project will be the most sustainable development in the country.

"There will be no waste of sewer. There will be no water that is lost. What we are doing here is to make Shongweni sustainable to create business enterprises that will work with us in urban agriculture, west land rehabilitation, and creating local labour and supplies to make us self-sustainable.

“Too long, we have relied as South Africans of just having energy and having water. We need to save those."
