eThekwini E-coli beach closures spark tourism concern
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
ActionSA says the closure of some beaches in Durban due to the detection of E-coli has dealt another blow to an already struggling local tourism sector.
The affected beaches are central and north of the Umngeni River all the way to Salt Rock.
Tests were conducted after officials saw murky waters in some beaches and results showed a positive presence of the bacteria.
ActionSA's Busi Radebe says the closure of the beaches are another sight of the continued mismanagement of eThekwini and its infrastructure.
"Durban beaches are no longer safe. With a stream of tourists arriving one cannot help but be concerned about their safety and security of all that is within the city", She said.
"The city has decayed to the point where each time it rains there is a high chance of sewage and other pollutants spilling onto surrounding beaches as a result of mismanagement of infrastructure maintenance", Radebe said.
