eThekwini discusses possible tax on hotel industry
Updated | By Zongile Nhlapo
The hotel industry in eThekwini could be hit with a new form of tax should the municipality have its way.

It's looking at the feasibility of taxing hotels a certain amount that will go towards an artists' fund.
The municipality believes local performing artists attract a lot of business from which the hotel industry is benefiting.
eThekwini's Thembinkosi Ngcobo says the idea is still in its infancy and talks with the hotel industry will be held.

"Such funding will then go towards providing skills to the people involved. Secondly, this will assist some of the well-known artists living below the bread line.
"Some of them - for instance - when they die, they will get a decent burial. Some of the funding will go towards that," he said.
