eThekwini denies assets attached, says metro police labour ruling under review

eThekwini has refuted media reports that some 40 metro police vehicles will go under the hammer next month so that the City can settle a R10 million labour dispute.

The matter emanates from the appointment of Steve Middleton as Metro Police head in 2018.

Two senior officers who had applied for the position claim they were more qualified and experienced.

The bargaining council ruled in their favour and ordered the city upgrade their salaries and to match Middleton's pay grade with back pay.

Some media reports have suggested eThekwini has now had 40 police vehicles attached in order to settle the amount.

The City's spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela says this is not the case.

"What happened is that employees took the arbitration award to the CCMA to certify it and such certification gives an award the effect equivalent to an order of court which means that it can be executed.

"The municipality then took that arbitration award on review in the labour court.

"So when the employees insisted on executing the award not withstanding the pending review application the municipality approached the labour court for an order to state the execution of the award pending the final determination of the review application."
