eThekwini council set to elect new mayor

eThekwini council members will gather under one roof again to finish what they started this week.

Monday's inaugural council meeting closed prematurely after a power outage and disruptions when some ANC supporters stormed the venue at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Newly-elected speaker, Thabani Nyawose will preside over the sitting this afternoon. That's when multiple rounds of voting will get underway for the next mayor, deputy mayor and council chief whip.
The ANC's provincial spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela says they're hoping to bag the mayor's seat.

"We'll have to accept the democratic processes which the councillor would undertake and what is key to us is the setting up of a proper functioning municipality with the key task in services for our people in the metro of eThekwini.”
The DA will put forward eThekwini caucus leader Nicole Graham for the mayor's position.
She says they'll work with opposition parties for other positions.
"The reality is that the majority of the people of the city did not vote for the ANC, they voted for other opposition parties who have now have the chance to comes together and work towards a common goal of building a new government that will get things done."
Meanwhile, the IFP's Mdu Inkosi says there's no time for delaying tactics.
"They need to grow up, there is no need for it. They must accept they are losing power in most of the municipalites, especially in the economic class. If they do that they show they are desperate and its the end of the ANC."
