eThekwini contractor speaks out about death threats
An eThekwini Municipality contractor has told Newswatch he hasn't been at work for the past week due to death threats they have been receiving at the city's Electricity Department.
Technicians have been targeted by members of the Delangokubona Business Forum who're alleged to be demanding contracts from the municipality.
The worker, who wants to remain anonymous, says he's been in the industry for 15 years.
He says the job is generally risky as they work in small teams and often late into the night.
The contractor is pleading with authorities to urgently intervene.
"If we don't get paid, we cannot live. These people are coming along making idle threats saying they are going to kill us.
"If I don't get paid, I don't get a salary, I'm unable to put a roof over my head. Why is the justice system not stepping in? This is a criminal matter. They are intimidating. Why are criminal charges not laid against them," he said.
eThekwini says while it's put security measures in place, it's urging contractors and municipal officials to report incidents of intimidation to police as and when they occur.
