eThekwini beachgoers urged not to tamper with drumlines

The KZN Sharks Board is appealing to the public not to tamper with the drumlines it will place along eThekwini’s beaches next month.
The board’s Greg Thompson says the authorities must be notified immediately if any of the drumlines are displaced. A combination of nets and drumlines will be used to protect bathers - while reducing the bay catch of harmless non-shark species.
The project should take a year to implement. Thompson says any interference with the drumlines will have a negative impact on the project.
"I think a lot of the times people see our buoys and see other uses for them and so help themselves to them. This has been reported to authorities," he said.
"We are going to have lifeguards keeping an eye out. Steer clear from the equipment. It belongs to local authorities", Thompson said.
