eThekwini assures service delivery won't be affected following arrest of top official

eThekwini Municipality has moved to assure residents that the arrest of the City Manager won't impact service delivery.

Sipho Nzuza was taken into custody this morning in connection with the multi-million rand Durban Solid Waste tender scandal.

He appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on charges of fraud, money laundering and corruption. 


He's been granted bail of R 50 000 and is expected to join other co-accused including former mayor Zandile Gumede in court next month.


City spokesperson Mswakhe Mayisela says: "There is nothing that is going to impede service delivery, but also we would like to commit ourselves into cooperating with our law enforcement agencies and institutions that are tasked with dispensing  justice at all time."


The DA caucus leader, Nicole Graham says "the ANC elected criminals" to government in 2016. 

The Cooperative Governance Department has also reacted to Nzuza's arrest - saying the allegations are serious. 


It says officials took an oath to act in the interest of their municipality and its residents - adding it has confidence in the council to deal with the matter.
