eThekwini Municipality says teams are expected to complete the clean-up of a chemical spill on the N3 by 5 pm on Friday.

The hydrochloric acid spill happened after the contents of a truck fell on the Durban side of the freeway near Spaghetti Junction in the morning.
The N3 remains closed between the M7 interchange and Spaghetti Junction.
"eThekwini Municipality’s Traffic Officials and relevant emergency workers have opened the N3 westbound near the Pavilion Shopping Centre, towards Pietermaritzburg following closure due to a spill of hazardous substances on the road," the city said in a statement.

"The eastbound towards the Durban CBD remains closed until the scene has been cleared by the technical officials who will certify that the road is usable and no longer dangerous for road users, pedestrians and neighbouring community."
In the meantime, traffic has been diverted to alternative routes.
"Traffic officers will assist road users in all major intersections and busy routes for ease of movement until the N3 has been fully opened," eThekwini said.
"Environmental scientists and officials are working on the scene to ascertain the type of substance that spilled over the road this morning."
