The maintenance will be done on both units at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

Unit 2 is set to go offline for a period of five months from Monday. Unit 1 will then be taken offline.

Eskom's Riedewaan Barkadien says technicians will also replace the units’ three steam generators.

He says the much-need outage is the first of its kind for Koeberg.

“The two units at Koeberg are over 920 MW each, therefor the largest generating unit on the African continent and their safe and reliable operation is a significant to Eskom meeting the country’s electricity demand.

“The extended unavailability of the units due to planned long outages does however mean that electricity supply may be under additional strain this year.

“Our staff is committed and well prepared to make history.”
