Eskom says it is in talks with striking workers unions

Earlier today, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) confirmed that all of its 15 000 members at the power utility - in all provinces - had embarked on a full-blown strike after Eskom failed to meet their wage increase demands.

This is despite the electricity producer having obtained a court interdict last night, in a bid to stop the mass action from continuing.

Following a national shop steward meeting yesterday, the union agreed to reduce its demands to 10% for the lowest paid workers, and 8.5% for the highest paid workers.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said although some workers didn't report for duty today, operations hadn't been affected.

"We are currently in a meeting which started at 10 o'clock this morning; we will be discussing as normal.

"Negations are give and take so therefore it is too early to say what the final outcome will be, but yes we are engaging at the moment. We have three unions here NUM, NUMSA and Solidarity," he said.

Phasiwe said those who didn't pitch for work will face disciplinary action.
