Eskom not being privatised: Ramaphosa
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
President Cyril Ramaphosa has assured South Africans that Eskom remains
a state-owned enterprise.
He has dismissed reports indicating there’s a possibility the struggling power utility could be privatised to address the electricity supply problems.
"We are not privatising Eskom, we are restructuring it so that it is best able to perform the mandate that it has. Eskom is a state-owned enterprise and what we are seeking to do is to say there must be a section of Eskom and a company that deals with transmission only. Through that, we will be able to attract investments for transmission purposes," said Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa was speaking yesterday during the ANC National Working Committee’s engagement with the party’s Gauteng structures in Germiston.
He says some companies only want to help fix the situation at Eskom.
"Those who will be able to put in money are not going to be buying Eskom. It's just to make sure that we have money. As it is now, Eskom owes R480 billion and it is money that was spent building up a number of our power stations and with cost overruns."
