Eskom says there'll be load reduction in several areas of KZN today to prevent network overloading.

This will be carried out between seven and nine in the morning - and between 5pm and 7pm.

Areas that will be affected include Mbali and Edendale in Pietermaritzburg, Madadeni in Newcastle, Ezakheni in Ladysmith, Esikhawini and Manguzi in Zululand as well as parts of Richmond and the south coast.

Eskom says the network is burdened by illegal connections, vandalised electricity infrastructure, and bypassed meters.

Spokesperson,  Sikhonathi Mantshantsha says the power utility has decided to switch off the electricity supply to those areas, during the hours when the most damage occurs.

"That is between 5am and 9am and between 5pm and 10pm. We have implemented this to limit the losses to protect Eskom's infrastructure and the properties of the community."

The power utility says it's battling to keep up with increased equipment failure which is proving costly.
