South Africans waited anxiously for Medupi’s completion as the country has experienced frequent load-shedding this year.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says Medupi's unit six has been online since March, but had been undergoing testing until now.

''What it means is that we are now officially getting this unit of Medupi Power Station and it's going to be handed over to Eskom in other words.

''But in terms of electricity supply the same unit has been producing power since March 2 this year. The officials have handed over the unit to Eskom,'' he said.

The construction of the power station is years behind schedule and a further five more units still have to be brought online.

Once complete, Medupi will be one of the biggest coal power stations in the world.
