The France Development Agency is lending the utility some R6.5-billion which Eskom says will be used to restore, upgrade and maintain the power grid.

The entity will receive the cash in phases until 2020, it's already been R1.5-million.

Meanwhile, Eskom says there won't be load shedding for Christmas and New Year celebrations as well. The break from blackouts is expected to last until the 13th of January.

"With many companies closing - this will help us reduce the strain on the power grid. That will create a breathing space for us. Our technicians will be able to work without necessarily dealing with the pressure coming through from the demand. We will work at a fairly good pace," Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe said.
