Eastern Cape police say the 52-year-old tavern owner and employees, aged 33 and 34 years respectively, were detained after the provincial liquor board laid charges against them for allegedly contravening the Liquor Act.

SAPS spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana says, among other things, their investigation focused on allegations that alcohol was supplied or sold to children under the age of 18 years.

The deaths of the 12 girls and nine boys remains a mystery.

The two staff members have been given the option of a fine, while the tavern owner is set to appear in court in August.
