EnviroServ faces possible action over Upper Highway waste smell

The Department of Environmental Affairs has issued a notice of intention to suspend or revoke EnviroServ’s Waste Management License for its Shongweni Landfill operation.

The department issued a statement yesterday saying the notice has been prompted by the findings of a series of investigations by the Green Scorpions in collaboration with eThekwini last month. EnviroServ has four days from receipt of the notification to make representations as to why its license should not be revoked or suspended.

EnviroServ has always maintained it runs a fully legal and compliant site, adding that other sources contribute to the mal-odour experienced in the Upper Highway area.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people are expected to march through Hillcrest today against the chemical smell that has been wafting through the area for months.

The Upper Highway Air NPO is behind the ‘toxic trek’. Organiser Lauren Johnson says the smell is still a problem to the residents of the area.

"We have actually not felt any alleviation from the smell. It is definitely becoming worse and reaching other areas," she said.

"Unfortunately it is always there and depending in which direction the wind is blowing different communities are affected by it, Johnson said.
