Environmental group opposes plans for Durban dig-out port
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance has planned mass protest action in the coming months against Transnet and a proposed dig-out port, south of Durban.
Authorities have proposed building a second port in the city at the old Durban International Airport site.
The group's Priya Pillay says their next picket will take place on Freedom Day.
"Transnet's development will impact on the people - looking at the environmental aspects, the social impact, the basic destruction of livelihoods and the entire fabric of the community," she said.
Pillay says communities want to work closely with developers.
"We're looking at ways we can move this campaign forward and be part of the development on the planning process more than just to sit back and allow industry and government to bully us out of our own homes,"she said.
Residents from Merebank, the Bluff, Isipingo, Chatsworth and Umlazi attended public hearings on the matter in the Durban CBD yesterday.
Representatives also discussed ways to put the brakes on the development of a logistics park at the site of the former Clairwood Racecourse.
