Environmental activist: Engen has fail to address core issues in Durban South community
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Democratic Alliance says Wentworth residents' concerns must be included in the south Durban community's health and safety plan.

It's calling for more engagement from Engen at a community level after Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Environment, Forestry and Fisheries visited the refinery in Merebank.
The complex was rocked by a devastating blast in December, triggered by the explosion of a large tank of nitrogen.

Damages have been put at a cost of R800 million.
DA members, who're part of the committee, says the company's operating permit has been revoked.

It needs to submit an investigation report and a list of preventative measures to authorities. Residents meanwhile have expressed distrust of oil refinery saying the municipality and local government have failed to hold Engen accountable.
Environmental activist, Desmond D'sa says Engen have not sent anyone around to deal with the houses that were damaged. "They have not health with the people whose flat burned in a result of the fire and the girl was injured, Engen had really failed to address the core issue in that community."
