Eskom's zero percent counter-offer led to pickets by workers.

NUMSA's Irvin Jim says they have a mandate from workers to ensure they improve their wages and other issues.

Chief negotiator for NUM, Helen Diatile says they are hoping for nothing less than a 10 percent offer.

"Our workers will always be happy if they get a two-digit percentage. We have not yet achieved it, but we can still negotiate if other issues are being attended to," she said.

Workers at the power utility downed tools last week and picketed outside Megawatt Park in Johannesburg.

Eskom says the recent return of load shedding is a direct result of the industrial action. The parastatal says it needs about 10 days for the system to return to normal.

Meanwhile, Eskom said in a statement today that there is a low chance of rational load shedding today, but the risk will increase during the peak demand period between 5pm and 9pm tonight.

Officials are urging residents and businesses to reduce their usage in an effort lesssen demand on the grid.
