Empangeni prison raid 'disturbing, points to security breaches'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Correctional Services Department says it's shocked by what a raid at a prison in Empangeni turned up.
Prisoners at the Qalakabusha Maximum Correctional Centre were searched on Tuesday following a string of escapes and a contraband problem.
The raid was led by acting national commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale after the facility was flagged as one of those in need of urgent intervention.
Officials say 37 cell phones, chargers, dagga with an estimated street value of R12 000 and money are just some of the items that have been confiscated.
"The amount of contraband removed is disturbing and it is something that can never be tolerated. This points to serious security breaches," says the department’s Singabakho Nxumalo.
"It questions the role of managers, supervisors and unit managers at that particular facility. It is therefore necessary that a comprehensive investigation be instituted."
