Embattled Umkhanyakude struggling to pay municipal staff
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
There seems to be no immediate end in sight for the troubles gripping the Umkhanyakude District Municipality.

It's now struggling to pay staff salaries.
The municipality was placed under administration earlier this year.
It's repeatedly been unable to successfully sit for council meetings due to squabbles between the African National Congress (ANC) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillors.
There's also been financial mismanagement at the municipality and poor service delivery.
July salaries of councillors and managers were almost not paid as the municipality is unable to vote on a budget.

It's had to ask Finance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube for approval.
Spokesperson Nathi Oliphant said: "We also briefed Cabinet about it and there has been some intervention that we will be undertaking as been approved by the Cabinet.
"We have also moved to inform National Treasury about our intended intervention as as well as national department of Cooperative Governance.
"We are very confident that we will bring stability to these municipalities and that in fact they will be able sit down and hold their budget council meeting."
