Electricity prices could increase by 15% in April
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
South Africans are in for a major electricity price come April this year.
It comes after the Gauteng High Court this week ruled that an amount of R10 billion be added to Eskom’s allowable revenue to be recovered from customer tariffs in the 2021/22 financial year.
The order will result in an average price increase of approximately 15% in the electricity tariff for residents.
It follows discussions and an agreement between the power utility and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

Eskom's regulatory affairs manager, Hasha Tlhotlhalemajee says the implementation of the order will allow Eskom to move towards addressing the shortfall related to reaching a level where Eskom has been recovering costs reflective of its efficient cuts.
"In addition, the poor residential customers are protected by both the free basic electricity as well as cost subsidies basically provide some kind of support to residential customers."
