The Independent Electoral Commission was busy with vote-counting in local elections on Tuesday morning, which saw South Africans going to the polls for the first time in a pandemic.

Over 100 000 votes have already been counted in municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal.

IEC officials have been busy with ballot counting since 9pm Monday night when polling stations closed.

But we won't know the outright winners until all the results are tallied.

Some have started to trickle in KZN, and this is what we know so far.

The African National Congress' taken early leads in the municipalities of Newcastle, Dannhauser, Umfolozi, Mpofana and Greater Kokstad.

The Inkatha Freedom Party, so far, has taken a large number of votes in Jacob Zuma's hometown of Nkandla.

The party's also leading in Umfolozi and Nqutu.

Umgeni and the Okhahlamba Local Municipality are looking positive for the DA.

Meanwhile, the National Freedom Party's looking strong in Nongoma and eDumbe.
