Elderly woman killed in Phoenix home fire
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Investigators are probing the cause of a deadly house fire in Phoenix, north of Durban.
An elderly woman was found dead yesterday in her bedroom where the blaze broke out. EThekwini Fire’s Division Commander, Bheki Hadebe, says when they got to the Clarecroft home the flames had already engulfed the roof of the two-story property.
It took them an hour to extinguish the fire.
Hadebe says two bedrooms and the bathroom on the second floor were damaged. The woman believed to have been in her 70s lived with her son who tried to save her.
"He explained to us he was downstairs when the fire started and by the time he noticed it was too late", Hadebe said.
"By the time he rushed upstairs he says the blaze was so strong that he could get inside the bedroom", he said.
