A group of armed robbers broke into the property of an elderly couple last night. Police say they tied up a 70-year-old sugarcane farmer and beat him up until he lost consciousness.

They also tied up the farmer's wife and covered her mouth and nose until she suffocated. The woman died a short while later.

It's believed the suspects had followed the farmer home after he had dropped off a worker at a market in Verulam.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says officers were notified in the early hours of this morning when a neighbour heard the man's screams for help.

"It appeared that the husband managed to alert the neighbours who came and assisted. They broke the door open and rescued the husband. Then the police were called to attend.

"A case of murder and robbery were opened for further investigation. We are appealing to anyone who may have information about the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward and give us information," Zwane said.
