Elderly, disabled to be front of line for Tongaat relief efforts

Cooperative Governance Minister Thembi Nkadimeng says the elderly and those living with disabilities will be prioritised during relief and recovery efforts in storm-hit Tongaat.

The minister visited the community on Wednesday.
A tornado struck the area, tearing down homes and leaving many displaced.

At least 11 people lost their lives, including seven from Tongaat 17,000 individuals were affected.
Nkadimeng says rebuilding efforts will begin soon.

She says the roads agency will also start repairing damaged bridges and roads.
"Sanral will be coming to check the bridges and the roads in the areas that have been affected. We discovered quite a lot after the tractors cleared."
