Efforts to prevent toxic waste disposal at Durban beach
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Residents from Shongweni and Merebank will hold an urgent meeting with the Green Scorpions today.

They're fighting alleged plans to dump millions of litres of toxic waste from the Shongweni Landfill offshore at Cuttings Beach in Merebank, south of Durban.
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance claims the waste is starting to have side effects in the Hillcrest and KwaNdengezi areas due to pollution released into the air.
SDCEA's Desmond D'Sa says over 300 complaints have been lodged with the authorities.

Residents have also petitioned to have the dumpsite closed down.
D'Sa wants the company to get rid of the waste at its own expense, saying dumping it in the ocean is not on.
